More 3 Fun

Tuesday 27 March 2007 at 5:53 pm I've got the data plan going ($5/month for 5MB)...

3's got their X-Series plans out.

The base plan:
$20/month
1000 minutes of Skype calls on the phone (if your phone supports skype) (yes, a cellphone provider allowing the use of skype).
Planet 3 Bumper Pack - news, sport, cricket TV etc
Mobile email - unlimited email on the phone
Mobile web and Mobile broadband - 500MB/month (whoa, suddenly the data plan I'm on doesn't seem so good...)
Access to Orb
and Yahoo/MSN on the phone.

Nice... except only the people with a select range of phones can use it.

I could upgrade my phone... but then I'd be on another 24 month contract, paying $18/month for a new phone... plus $20 for the X-Series plan. $29+$18+$20 = ouch. For that kind of price, I would consider starting my own data network :P

From the person I talked to, I gathered that if I upgraded my phone outside of 3, I "may" be able to signup, but they "can't guarantee" that it will work, and "don't reccommend" it. Heh, since when do I do what's reccommended? :)

I don't actually care if the other services don't work - it's the 500MB of mobile broadband I really want. So maybe if I can still signup? I'll see what I can do...

Those questions over with, he asked if he could help with anything else.
"Can I get an unlock code, as I've been with you for 6 months?"
"Yeah, sure, what's the last 4 digits of your IMEI?"
"8582"
"Ok, your unlock code is..."

After I'm done with the call, switch the phone off, pull the battery, shove in my old Vodafone USIM (I used to be on vodafone prepaid before 3). Turn the phone on, enter the USIM pin, key in the unlock code, and... well, the SIM won't register to the network, having had the number ripped from it by 3, and having not been used since... 7 months ago?. Power the phone off, put the 3 USIM back in, and power it on. Note that I am now on 3, with an unlocked phone...

Ask any Telstra customer what they have to do to get an unlock code, it's funny. Just don't have any sharp objects nearby...

Different look

Friday 23 March 2007 at 7:22 pm I changed the intro page... for those of you who only look here, it looks... different.
http://gm.stackunderflow.com/

Probably worth a look :)

And the background here is changed to match it. Slightly less boring than grey...

(I haven't dared to mess with the other colours...)

Not zTower for once: GPSTool.

Sunday 11 March 2007 at 10:28 pm By now, I imagine you're thinking "Enough with the zTower screenshots". I suppose you're wishing you were the one taking them, with it on your machine, am I right? :)

I'm back to working on GPSTool.

Here we go, some new graphs. Acceleration and sink / climb rate :)

The X/Y position graph isn't quite working yet. It will be soon, I promise.

Oh, and I've got to get some form of logging going. And an output to Google Earth.

Then probably more stats on distance etc.

More screenshots.

A better titlebar :)

The window is now resiszable. On a more useful note, we can also do the below:

There's also another feature, FastBG - that skips the gradient and just draws the background as a flat colour. It looks the same (mostly), but is a lot faster :).

More screenshots...

The usual tower you've come to expect...

Decide how much they should pay...

... but they decide if they like it or not.

Some answers, at least...

Thursday 01 March 2007 at 2:40 pm Remember this?

cnet article:
""I screwed up a little bit," he said. There was a lot of confusion around the Mac hack because the original presentation used a third party Wi-Fi card. However, Maynor and Ellch had in fact also found flaws in Apple's own hardware, he said."

That explains point 3, and partially 2. None of the others though.

Still, "Apple fixed that particular problem in September with Mac OS X 10.4.8, Maynor said.", is the interesting line. At least we know it was patched now then.

I wonder if it was the same exploit released during MoAB? Hmmm.

Apparently he provided Apple with code and packet dumps, and the issue was still not fixed. This may have been the exploit that Apple claimed was found by an internal audit...

There was (and still largely seems to be) a large cloud of misinformation surrounding the whole thing. And why was C|Net always the first to cover the issue (and ZDNet the first to attempt to scare everyone with it)? Hmmm, Microsoft having a large share in advertising at both of these?
